The Hildebrand Project is dedicated to advancing the tradition of Dietrich von Hildebrand by bringing his work into dialogue with other currents in contemporary philosophy and providing opportunities for in-depth study for scholars new to Hildebrand’s work. In addition to our public Reading Groups, Summer Seminars, and Summer Residencies, we host high-level, invitation-only Advanced Reading Groups and Colloquia for scholars. These events are specifically designed for professional academics and advanced graduate students, providing a space to engage with pressing philosophical questions, putting Dietrich von Hildebrand’s thought in dialogue with other major intellectual traditions.
Advanced Reading Groups
Our Advanced Reading Groups take place online, over 8-10 weeks. Each session allows participants to engage in rigorous discussions, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas on crucial issues. Through these discussions, we uncover new insights into Hildebrand’s phenomenological personalism and bring Hildebrand’s work into dialogue with other thinkers and traditions.
Past Advanced Reading Group topics have included:
- Hildebrand’s Aesthetics
- Human Dignity
- Hildebrand’s Ethics and Servais Pinckaers’ The Sources of Christian Ethics
- Dallas Willard and Dietrich von Hildebrand on Moral Knowledge
- Personalism and Neuroscience
- Hildebrand’s Transformation in Christ
- Edith Stein and Alice von Hildebrand on Femininity
- Disenchantment
- Dietrich von Hildebrand and Gabriel Marcel
Colloquia
Our colloquia serve as platforms for fostering novel scholarship on Dietrich von Hildebrand in connection to and in debate with contemporary schools of thought. The colloquia bring together eminent and emerging scholars to present original papers and responses, followed by generous time for discussion, creating a collaborative environment focused on a shared pursuit of deeper understanding. Each colloquium explores timely and important issues, encouraging fresh insights and rigorous debate.
